On 25 July 2023 the Cabinet approved the creation of the International Center for AI Research and Ethics (ICAIRE) in Riyadh, with legal personality and financial and administrative independence. UNESCO's General Conference approved Category 2 status for the center on 16 November 2023, and the tripartite agreement was announced at the Global AI Summit on 11 September 2024, signed by Abdullah Alghamdi, President of the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA), and UNESCO's Director-General.
The center is Saudi Arabia's vehicle for international diplomacy on AI ethics.
