On 29 November 1977 a royal directive created the National Center for Science and Technology, which a royal decree converted on 31 December 1985 into the King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST). KACST became the Kingdom's main applied-research organization, responsible for technology advice, turning research outputs into industrial products and supporting universities and research centers.
It is the institutional root of the Kingdom's later computing and AI work.
