# SDAIA announces UNESCO Category 2 status for ICAIRE at Global AI Summit

The Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA) announced on 11 September 2024 at the Global AI Summit that the International Center for AI Research and Ethics (ICAIRE) had been classified as a UNESCO Category 2 center, through a tripartite agreement between the Kingdom, UNESCO and ICAIRE. The release said the status underscores Saudi Arabia's role in international and regional cooperation on AI policy, ethics and research. ICAIRE has since supported research, ethics awareness, policy coordination and capacity building, and Riyadh hosted the UNESCO Global Forum on the Ethics of AI in September 2026.
